Behind the Sound: Meet Cosmic

COSMIC writes alone at night, reflecting on where he has been and where he is going. The writing never really stops.

Speaking to Harfan Harfan around the release of his new single “Parolet,” COSMIC said writing is how he processes things. “I still have a lot to say because I’m still living, changing and seeing things differently, so the material never really runs out.”

That process is not always comfortable. Later in the track, he writes “ghrami hedheka 3i9abi,” describing his passion as his punishment.

"IT’S A PASSION BECAUSE I’VE ALWAYS FELT THE NEED TO CREATE AND EXPRESS MYSELF THROUGH RAP. IT’S A PUNISHMENT BECAUSE IT NEVER REALLY LEAVES YOU."

“It never really leaves you,” he says. “You’re always thinking about the next idea, the next verse, the next song.” He keeps choosing it because that process is what keeps him “alive creatively.”

He is less concerned now with finding out what he can do, he already knows that. What interests him more is going deeper into who he is and making music that carries something that stays with people beyond the moment they hear it.

"I’M AT A POINT WHERE I KNOW WHAT I’M CAPABLE OF AS AN ARTIST, SO NOW I’M MORE INTERESTED IN GOING DEEPER INTO WHO I AM AND WHAT I HAVE TO SAY. I WANT THE MUSIC TO CARRY SOMETHING REAL, SOMETHING THAT STAYS WITH PEOPLE BEYOND THE MOMENT THEY HEAR IT."

A lot of that comes through the writing, but he still keeps part of himself separate from COSMIC.

“A lot of me is in COSMIC, especially in the writing,” he says. “But COSMIC is still a version of me. I choose what to reveal and what to keep for myself.”

“Parolet” also looks outward. COSMIC writes about money, a tired Tunisia and the need to keep moving. His view of the scene itself is more hopeful, saying “Tunisian artists have everything they need to reclaim a much stronger position on the wider scene. The talent has always been here, and I believe we’re heading toward a period where Tunisian music will once again carry real weight beyond our borders.”

For him, that means more freedom to experiment and more spaces where artists can develop without being pushed into a formula.

“I want to contribute by making music that feels personal to Tunisia but doesn’t sound limited by it.”
